Google Penguin: A bad Dream for WordPress Theme Creators

WordPress theme creators have got the hardest blow this year from Google Penguin. They have been penalized harshly for bearing credit in their footer. Simultaneously this gave rise to a lot of debates. While some believe Google was unnecessarily strict on this issue. Moreover, they also commented that the reason put forward by Google Penguin was also not very convincing. But, those who support Google’s stance state that it is a lesson for a number of spammers who overlooked the stringent rules and regulations of the same and tend to increase web traffic in a negative manner.

The expert’s comment on the stance taken by Google

A section of the SEO and web experts believe that WordPress was not penalized for issues such as quality, keyword stuffing or link scheming. Basically, there were three complicated links which were held responsible for the same. Unfortunately, all of them were connected with WPMU.org. One of these links was using pirated software, which is highly objectionable for Google Penguin. Likewise, the other two were parts of certain spam blogs. It was further found out that one of them was using a WordPress theme that was generally available with an old version of the same. This theme could be accessed by the users from a link provided at the footer of that spam blog. Thus, the blog got vulnerable to the penalties from Google Penguin. In the process, WordPress was also held responsible so such an act.

James Farmer, the mastermind at WPMU.org stated that the whole incident was a shock for WordPress, if the credentials of the same were taken into account. WordPress integrates as many as 10,400+ likes from Facebook, 4,276 subscribers from FeedBurner and 600+ supports from Twitter. So, getting punished by Google Penguin was really an unfortunate incident for WordPress. Later, he came up with a conclusion that the free distribution rights of WordPress themes proved to be the detrimental issue for the same. This open offer was availed of by serious graphic designers as well as spammers. The spammers actually used them as additional features with their sites, in order to improve their site interface and boost their search engine ranking. This would eventually mean generation of traffic. But, this is a highly unscrupulous practice.

Google Penguin Actions

Another SEO specialist, Rand Fishkin opined that this penalty faced by WordPress was the effect of the careless attitude many users. They took Google Penguin too lightly and faced such a dire consequence. Specially, most of the spammers have an idea that tagging themselves with something as renowned as WordPress will never leave any chance of suspicion for Google Penguin. This is exactly where their ideas were proved erroneous and the consequence was penalty from Google. Fishkin referred to the same as highly anti-manipulative movement, which faced dire consequences.

Factors that are regarded as undesirable for Google

Some of the experts believe that the themes that have backlinks in the footer are considered as undesirable for Google. Hence, the sites doing the same are more liable to get penalized. This also explains what WordPress punished by Google Penguin. Unfortunately, a majority of the themes created by designers at WordPress have links at the footer section. These points back to the creator of that particular theme.

Factors that are regarded as undesirable for Google

Another set of experts believe that the name of the creator connected to the back-link at the WordPress theme page is not the major issue. Basically, the name of the site owner present in the link at the footer section is the critical factor. This means that even though the name of the designer is still permissible by Google Penguin, the site owner, who incorporates a free WordPress theme in this site and replaces the credit of the creator with that of his/her own becomes more vulnerable to punishments by Google Penguin. Moreover, such a practice is also not allowed by the official site of WordPress.com.blog as well.
